Virtual Production

Virtual Production is where cinematic storytelling meets real-time interactive technology. Using Unreal Engine and other industry-standard tools, I design and implement immersive environments that function both as playable game spaces and cinematic stages. My work focuses on blending creativity, technical precision, and workflow efficiency to deliver dynamic, engaging experiences.

PROJECT DULDRUM

A short film created using virtual production techniques in Unreal Engine, blending real-time environments with live-action footage. (Filmed at Cinespace Studios, Chicago)

Created in Unreal Engine 5 as part of a collaborative short film project. I designed and optimized the virtual environment, integrated camera tracking, and prepared assets for real-time playback on LED walls. The project utilized Unreal Engine 5, Maya, and Quixel Megascans, focusing on achieving cinematic lighting and seamless interaction between live-action and digital environments.
This experience developed my understanding of real-time workflows, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and the future of storytelling through virtual production.

Software and Hardware used

  • Unreal Engine 5 | Maya | Quixel Megascans | nDisplay | Motion tracking (OptiTrack / Vive trackers if applicable).

Goals

Create a compelling cinematic sequence with strong atmosphere and visual storytelling.

  1. Learn the fundamentals of Unreal Engine’s Sequencer and real-time camera workflows.

  2. Experiment with lighting setups to match film production standards.

Process

Developed a modular environment in UE5, optimized textures for real-time playback, and synchronized camera movement with live actors to achieve seamless parallax.

Previsualization: Storyboarded key shots and established tone.

  1. Environment Setup: Built a scene optimized for real-time rendering.

  2. Cinematography: Experimented with lens types, shot compositions, and camera movement.

  3. Lighting Pass: Balanced dynamic lighting with performance for cinematic results.

  4. Final Cut: Edited shots into a cohesive sequence with pacing and rhythm.
